'Assassin's Creed' Live-Action Series in Development at Netflix
After becoming an instant hit upon debut in 2007, Ubisoft's blockbuster franchise, "Assassin's Creed," has been the next target for Netflix's adaptation. These open-world games will come to life as fans of the franchise can expect to re-explore the war and the secret rival orders; the Assassins and the Templars.
Variety has learned that Netflix will adapt the game series not only for a live-action rehash, but the deal between Ubisoft and Netflix will serve as a triple threat: a live-action series, an animated series, and an anime series will be based around the game.
“From its breathtaking historical worlds and massive global appeal as one of the best selling video game franchises of all time, we are committed to carefully crafting epic and thrilling entertainment based on this distinct IP and provide a deeper dive for fans and our members around the world to enjoy,” said Netflix original series vice president Peter Friedlander in a statement regarding the series' announcement.
This will not be the first time that "Assassin's Creed" will see itself being given the live-action treatment. Michael Fassbender took to the big screen as Cal Lynch, otherwise known as Assassin's Creed protagonist" Aguliar. The 2016 film was the recipient of mixed reactions across the board.
The show is still in the early stages of its development and is still in need of a showrunner, The Verge reports, and offers a reminder that there is no set plot or time period for the show. The Assassin's Creed universe is known for bringing together historical and modern-day themes tied into one.
“For more than 10 years, millions of fans around the world have helped shape the ‘Assassin’s Creed’ brand into an iconic franchise,” said Altman, head of Ubisoft Film & Television said for Variety. “We’re thrilled to create an ‘Assassin’s Creed’ series with Netflix and we look forward to developing the next saga in the ‘Assassin’s Creed’ universe.”
