Jack Black Joins 'Borderlands' Cast as Claptrap

The Borderlands cast tacks on another well-known name to voice a certain quippy robot.

Jack Black has been signed to play Claptrap, the snarky robot, in the upcoming film adaptation of the Borderlands video game series. The movie is set to take place on the planet Pandora, where its inhabitants are in search of an alien vault that has been rumored to host advanced technology within it. The adaptation for the screen has been in development since 2015 and will add Black to an all-star cast of Cate Blanchett as Lilith, Jaime Lee Curtis as Tannis, and Kevin Hart as Roland.

Black recently worked alongside both Blanchett and Borderlines director Eli Roth in Roth's 2018 comedy The House with a Clock in Its Walls. “I am so excited to reunite with Jack, this time in the recording booth,” Roth said in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter. “Claptrap is the funniest character in the game, and Jack is perfect to bring him to the big screen.”

Roth is working with Chernobyl (2019) co-creator Craig Mazin, who is locked in to pen the script. Mazin is double-dipping with his video game adaptations, as he is to both write and executively produce HBO's adaptation of Naughty Dog's The Last of Us.

“We couldn’t have been more in sync with our filmmakers and casting executives as we approached this role,” Nathan Kahane, president of the Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, said in a comment about Black's casting as Claptrap. “It’s one of the biggest no-brainer casting decisions we’ve ever made. Everyone who’s ever played the game knows Jack is perfect for this part. We’re thrilled he will add his endless comic energy and voice to our film – he’ll bring so much to the movie.”
